Resurfaced Eccentricities

Wire-cut surfaces, pooled glass, and porcelain inclusions generate intuitive ceramic landscapes.

Contextual Statement

Material, place, and transformation

Resurfaced Eccentricities developed through Martie’s renewed investigation of wire-cut ceramic forms, particularly during her 2018 Women’s Studio Workshop residency. Wavy cutting wires slice through clay and porcelain to create fan-like surfaces that can be layered, folded, overlaid, or cut directly into handbuilt forms. The technique deliberately welcomes irregularity. Additive and subtractive processes allow each work to evolve intuitively, while crushed found glass and industrial porcelain spheres introduce contrasting textures and reflective pools after firing. Earth, sky, and water hues soften the eccentric structures and invite associations with unfamiliar terrains. Rather than illustrating specific places, the works propose calm, mysterious environments that seem to have grown through a combination of natural force, material accident, and deliberate touch.
