Thow Kwang and Jalan Bahar: dragon kilns as living heritage
From 2013 to 2018, while teaching at the University of Brunei Darussalam, Martie continued her kiln research in Singapore. She documented the surviving Thow Kwang and Jalan Bahar / Guan Huat dragon kilns, focusing on wood firing, inherited technical knowledge, ritual traces, and the preservation of ceramic heritage amid rapid urban development.
Her Singapore research broadens the kiln-god project from the study of named deities to the cultural ecology of the kiln itself: architecture, firing practice, family history, community stewardship, and the question of how historic ceramic sites continue to function in contemporary life.
